The type of electrical connection between a solar array and a battery can be either Alternating Current (AC) or Direct Current (DC). AC is when the current flows rapidly forward and backwards (this is what the electricity grid uses to operate) and DC is where the current flows in one direction.  With emerging trend of solar power the most fundamental concern is the climate dependency  of the power generation. That is , power is generated when the sun is available and not necessarily when the demand is high.  The electric power grid operates based on a delicate balance between supply (generation) and demand (consumer use).
